Coral Tides

Inspired by the organic formations of coral reefs and tidal landscapes, this ceramic sculpture explores the fluid relationship between nature, movement, and memory. Its intertwining forms rise and fold into one another like living marine structures shaped over time by water and erosion.The work began on the pottery wheel, where the initial forms were created, and was later reshaped by hand to introduce a more organic sense of movement and spontaneity. This process allowed the sculpture to develop soft curves, openings, and flowing extensions that evoke coral formations and underwater life.A soft sky-blue glaze was applied across the surface, while delicate sponge techniques introduced subtle earthy tones resembling coastal sand, seafoam, and shifting ocean colours. These layered surface effects create depth and movement, allowing light to interact gently with the form and reveal changing textures from different angles.Areas of exposed clay beneath the glaze reinforce the connection between sea, earth, and the handmade process. Balancing fragility with resilience, the sculpture exists between stillness and motion — like a coral form slowly shaped by tide, time, and nature.
